About Econic® Packaging

Our mission is to partner with innovative companies that want to minimise their impact on the environment. If that is you, we invite you to join us in making a positive change.

Home Compostable Packaging

The Econic® home compostable packaging range was developed in New Zealand to help keep our environment `Clean and Green’. Each Econic packaging variant has been purpose-designed to help eco-conscious companies reduce their impact on the environment while still retaining the same level of functionality provided by traditional plastic films.

Our Vision

As a company we (Convex) are committed to reduce our impact on the environment and to help other companies do the same – and we have proven that by investing in the development of functional sustainable packaging for 25 years.

Affordable and Functional

The Econic journey began in 1995 when we purchased what was possibly the first commercial cornstarch-based packaging resin from a visionary company in Europe. We developed that resin into a film we market as GreensackTM. Although Greensack is very functional, with similar properties to traditional Polyethylene (PE) plastic – its softness, opaque colour and initial premium price limited its suitability for widespread use so we developed the film further to make it more affordable and functional. We also started working with other resins made from compostable materials, as they became available – and we continue to do so today.

Sustainably-Produced

Since its initial launch in 2010, Econic packaging has evolved to include a growing range of variants that have slightly different renewable content, aesthetic features and barrier properties to the original high barrier film, which is now marketed as EconicClassic. The majority of every  bag or wrapper branded `Econic’, ‘EconicClassic’, ‘EconicKraft’, ‘EconicSnow’ or ‘EconicClear’ is made from a combination of compostable films derived from sustainably-managed renewable resources. With the exception of the paper-outer on the EconicKraft and EconicSnow bags, each film has been internationally certified to the European and American commercial compostability standards (EN 13432 and ASTM6400) and either the European or Australian home compostable standards: OK Compost Home or AS5810.

In 2011 our commitment to sustainable packaging was recognised with an Environmental Packaging award from the Packaging Council of New Zealand (Inc).

Ongoing Development and Technical Support

Fairtrade Values

Our first Econic pack was developed in response to numerous enquiries from sustainable coffee companies looking for a functional pack that matched their Fairtrade values. It has since become the packaging of choice for a growing range of  products, from tea and drinking chocolate to cereals and snack bars. It’s even ideal for selected meat cuts!

Commercially Viable

We understand that to be commercially viable, packaging has to offer good barrier and sealing properties, and needs to be robust enough to withstand production processes and distribution chains with minimal modifications.

Strong Technical Support

The combination of our strong technical support and ongoing product development has allowed us to customise Econic packaging to suit most dry food applications and some selected short-shelf-life moist product packaging applications. We can help you trial Econic packaging from initial packing and sealing to the end of your supply chain to make sure it delivers the performance you need.
